MAPPING EVAPOTRANSPIRATION ON VINEYARDS: THE SENTINEL-2 POTENTIALITY


Estimation of actual evapotranspiration in Sicilianrnvineyards, is an emerging issue since these agriculturalrnsystems. Indeed unlike other agricultural species (Vitisrnvinifera L.) are generally cultivated under mild waterrnstress, in order to enhance quality (Guadillère et al.,rn2002. This has significant impacts on the managementrnof the scarce water resources of the region. The choicernof the most appropriate methodology for assessingrnwater use in these systems is still an issue of debating,rndue to the complexity of canopy and root systems andrnfor their high spatial fragmentation.rnIn vineyards, quality and quantity of the final productrnare dependent on the controlled stress conditions to bernset trough irrigation. This paper reports an applicationrnof the well-known Penman-Monteith approach, appliedrnin a distributed way, using high resolution remoternsensing data to map the potential evapotranspirationrn(ET_p). In 2008 a series of airborne multispectral imagesrnwere acquired on the 'Tenute Rapitalà', a wine farmrnlocated in the northwest of Sicily. Five airborne remoternsensing scenes were collected using a SKY ARROWrn351 650 TC/TCNS aircraft, at a height of about 1000 mrna.g.l.. The acquisitions encompassed almost a wholernphenological period, between June and September 2008rn(approximately one each three weeks). The platform hadrnon board a multi-spectral camera with 3 spectral bandsrnin the green (G, 530-570 nm), red (R, 650-690 nm) andrnnear infrared (NIR, 767-832 nm) wavelengths, and arnthermal camera with a broad band in the range 7.5-13rnμm. The nominal pixel resolution was approximatelyrn0.7 m for VIS/NIR acquisitions, and 1.7 m for thernthermal-IR data.rnField data were acquired simultaneously to airbornernacquisitions. The former include spectral reflectance inrnvisible, near infrared, middle infrared (VIS, NIR, MIR)rnregions of the spectrum, leaf area index (LAI), soilrnmoisture at different depths (both in row and belowrnplants). Moreover, meteorological variables and fluxesrnwere acquired by means of an Eddy correlation towerrnlocated within the field.rnThe VIS-NIR bands were atmospherically corrected andrncalibrated in order to calculate shortwave albedo (α_(SW)),rnvegetation height (h_C) and LAI, representing therndistributed inputs of the Penman-Monteith equation.rnThe paper reports a comparison between the applicationrnon the original airborne imagery and on the degradedrnones in order to simulate the Sentinel-2 spatialrnresolution. Moreover a sensitivity analysis has beenrncarried out on input parameters (i.e. α_(SW), LAI). Thernsensitivity was carried out to highlight the variability ofrnETP on the accuracy in the parameters assessmentrnobtainable using the multispectral Sentinel-2 images,rncompared to the one retrieved processing high spatialrnresolution airborne images. The coarser spatial detail ofrnSentinel-2 images is probably compensated by anrnincrease in spectral resolution, but this will berninvestigated in next papers.......
