Design and Lessons Learned from the Construction of a Solider Pile and Tied- back Wall


For solider pile and lagging walls, the steel piles below the ground are generally embedded into a concrete caisson. In order to drill these caissons over 50' deep through difficult materials, the drilling rig must be very close to the hole, on a level bench. Due to the existing slope embankment and stability issues, this was not an option for this wall. We solved this problem by using driven piles, and decreased construction cost significantly. Driving piles in the existing cinder/slag fill is difficult, causing piles to twist and deflect from their intended alignment, causing construction problems. This paper discusses theoretical design and detailing issues such as: modeling of the global stability force, detailing and design of the cast-in-piace lagging and internal whalers, minimizing piles' out-of-plumb and rotation due to driving through a thick layer of cinder and slag, and etc. Also, construction issues such as: pile driving techniques and problems, achieved pile plumbness, tie-back installation and problems, under ground obstructions, concrete cast-in-place lagging, backfilling, and other lessons learned during construction will be discussed.......
