Women in Paddy Transplantation and Harvesting -Physical and Physiological Stresses

The theme 'Women in Agriculture' is center stage in many academic debates and research discussions for nearly one and half decades and little could be portrayed on the productive processes of women with an ergonomic orientation. Ergonomic approach to women's work brings to focus, the anthropometrical characters, body physiology factors and capacity to function, muscular strengths of women and analyses the compatibility of the worker to the work and technology. The present paper examines the effect of paddy transplantation and harvesting activities on the circulatory system of women through a study conducted in Andhra Pradesh by ANGR Agricultural University on 'Ergonomics of Farm Women's Drudgery'. The research design comprised of a field study conducted on farmwomen. The sample size was twenty women belonging to 20 - 40 years for transplantation and sixty women for harvesting activity during two seasons consecutively. Physical fitness of the sample was assessed with the help of step test stool. Stresses on the circulatory system were assessed by recording heart rate per minute with the help of a polar heart rate monitor continuously for a period of four hours with an initial rest phase of 5 minutes before the start of the work and final recovery till the time the resting heart rate is restored. The independent variables like the ambient temperature, relative humidity, and coverage of land per unit time were also recorded. Results indicated that the activities caused an additional stress of 30 per cent on circulatory system over rest. The stress could be due to prolonged bending posture adopted by women during the work, poor physical capacity to work. The technology should facilitate to relieve them of their poor postures, improve their production efficiency and out put. Integration of the nutritional intervention and physical training, stress coping mechanisms would improve their capacity to function.......
