Integration of Phase Diagram Calculation with Solidification Models to Study the Solidification Path of an Al-rich Al-Cu-Mg Alloy


An integrated approach coupling phase diagram calculation with Scheil models was employed to calculate the paths of solidification for an Al-rich Al-Cu-Mg alloy. The calculated results in terms of the fractions of solid formed during the course of solidification and the concentration profiles across the dendritic arms were, compared with data obtained from directional solidification. The composition of the alloy studied was Al-4.11wt%Cu-1wt%Mg and the cooling rates used varied from 0.78 to 0.04℃/sec. While significant discrepancies were observed between the calculation using the basic Scheil model and the experimental data, the calculated results incorporating back diffusion in the solid approach the experimental data.......
