Fretting Wear - Something to Worry About?


1. Phosphorus additives studied had a generally good effect in reducing wear as measured by the Fretting Wear and SRV Wear test especially in the unadditized lithium complex core grease. 2. The high load and test temperature along with the low load of the HFRR Oscillating Wear test likely creates a more severe test regime in which the concentrations and types of chemistries are not as effective in preventing wear. 3. In general, the commercially balanced formulations had their performance lowered by the addition of competing surface active phosphorus additives. Only the Fretting Wear test gave a better performance with some of the phosphorus top treats in these greases. 4. There was no statistically significant correlation, in this study, between any of the performance tests investigated including penetration, 4 ball wear and friction along with the key fretting wear tests. A more detailed study needs to be undertaken to investigate the effect of test type and severity, additive chemistry and thickener interactions in order to better understand the mechanism by which additives can ameliorate the fretting wear of metal surfaces.......
