PROCESS SELECTION BY WTP MODEL FOR OPTIMAL DBP REMOVAL -CASE STUDY: BIRMINGHAM WATER WORKS, BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA


As the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is tightening the Disinfectant Byproductrn(DBP) rule, many utilities are considering process enhancement and optimization to controlrnDBP formation. The existing MCLs for DBPs are based on system-wide running annualrnaverages (RAA). The revised rule to be finalized in 2005, asks for compliance at eachrnsampling site.rnThe Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Birmingham, Alabama (Board) hasrnfour water filtration plants. The Board undertook this project to evaluate its options torncomply with the upcoming Stage 2 DBP rule. This study evaluated current treatmentrnprocess at the plants and several other alternative process trains developed by modifyingrnthe existing treatment scheme, using Water Treatment Plant (WTP) model developed byrnEPA. The alternative process trains include post filter GAC, biologically activated GACrnfilters (BAF), ozone and UV system. Chemical additions were also varied and freernchlorine, chloramines and chlorine dioxide additions were evaluated. Optimizedrncoagulation (OC) for different alternatives was also modeled. The DBP values as well asrnCT ratios for Giardias and Viruses at various time intervals were examined for qualitativerncomparison among the processes. This paper discusses the WTP modeling process forrnDBPs and how comparisons were developed among the alternative scenarios simulatedrnfor the Plants.......
