MODAL ANALYSIS OF WORKPIECE CLAMPED WITH A SPECIAL FOLLOWER REST DURING TURNING SLENDER BAR


Due to its high length-to-diameter ratio, slender bar often severely vibrates when the tool cuts around the middle section of workpiece. As a result, many lathe operations for long slender workpiece would not be possible without the use of follower rest. In order to investigate the effects of different follower rests on workpiece vibration, a special follower rest is compared with an ordinary one from theoretical and experimental aspects, respectively. First, natural frequencies and mode shapes of slender bar are determined by using finite element method. The results show that natural frequencies of workpiece with the special follower rest are higher than those with an ordinary follower rest, which means the former can increase the workpiece stability more significantly than the latter. Then, some experimental tests are carried out and it is found that the surface roughness and diameter error of workpiece with the special follower rest are lower than those with an ordinary follower rest. This validates the results of modal analysis from experimental aspect because more stable workpiece will result in higher machining accuracy.......
