SEISMIC CONTROL OF BUILDINGS USING COMBINED PASSIVE CONTROL METHODS


Two kinds of passive control methods, Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and viscoelastic (VE) dampers, are used together to mitigate the seismic hazard of the buildings. The control effectiveness under the seismic excitation and the physical implement of the control devices are discussed respectively. The advantages of the combination of TMD and VE dampers are investigated. A five-story building model is selected to analyses the control effect. The time-historic responses of the building excited by seismic waves with different frequency characteristics are calculated. The theoretic analysis and simulating results show that the combination of TMD and VE dampers will more effective and robust. The seismic response of the buildings may be reduced obviously using the combined passive control method comparing with any one passive device. TMD and the VE dampers can interact when the structure vibrations. TMD can reduce the floor drift; therefore protect the dampers from damage due to larger shearing strain. And the TMD can take effect alone when the temperatures surpass the optimal range of the VE dampers. Mean-while, VE dampers can reduce the mass-ratio of the appending mass and take effect alone when the TMD ineffective due to excited frequency variety. So the robustness of the con- trol effect is enhanced for seismic excitation with wide-band frequency characteristics during various environments.......
