Bridging Systems Engineering Views with aStructuring Matrix


This paper describes how a single information representation based upon DesignrnStructure Matrix (DSM) may be used to provide a unified information visualisationrnapplicable across a range of key systems engineering domains. This supports both thernplanning and technical architecting of a system and as such may be valuable as a linkrnbetween these areas and the more abstract lifecycle model. The ability to restructurernthe matrix through clustering and partitioning also supports systems engineering byrnproviding an improved understanding of the whole system. This understanding isrnfacilitated by the use of clearly defined attributes assigned to the links within thernmatrix.rnThe use of any systems wide tool is dependent upon its facility to manage informationrncoherently. In this paper methods enabling this management are proposed, and thernimplications for improving traceability across the wide range of different relationshipsrnthat exist within a systems engineering project are explored.rnAn example is provided based upon an automobile architecture, this examplerndemonstrates the depiction of linked information using linking different attributesrnwithin a matrix representation. It is demonstrated how DSM can facilitate furtherrnhierarchical breakdown of the system, and the benefits of clustering and partitioningrnof the problem are explored. A range of areas within the systems engineering processrnwhere these methods are likely to be valuable including formal optimisation, planningrnand requirements management are highlighted throughout the paper.
